With Drake Callender already on the shelf, the last thing Inter Miami needed was to lose a goalkeeper who has been playing well this season. But that’s what happened Wednesday night, when Oscar Ustari came off in the first half with an injury against FC Cincinnati.
Compounding matters is the loss of defender David Martinez, whose loan from River Plate ended on Thursday. With Ian Fray and Noah Allen both still out injured, it leaves the Herons very thin at center back.
That’s probably not the best situation to face when you’re about to take on a New York Red Bulls side that just scored five goals in the second half of their last match.
Emil Forsberg helped lead an onslaught of three goals in 13 minutes to spark their comeback. He assisted Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in the 70th minute to level the score, and then found the back of the net himself two minutes later.
Forsberg’s penalty in the 88th minute would put the home side up 5-2 in a match they won 5-3, capping a performance that saw him create two big chances and attempt six shots. It also marked the third time in four matches that he has contributed a goal.
The Swedish midfielder is red-hot at the moment, and facing an Inter Miami side that will be playing its second away match in four days. The Herons feature a roster with aging stars, and this is a spot where they’ve struggled since Messi joined.
Rocco Novo is Miami’s third-choice keeper, and he will be tested heavily by New York’s attack. He conceded twice on three shots against Cincinnati on Wednesday and will be making his first start with the Herons.
The loss of Ustari is one that will be felt, both in shot-stopping and in distribution from the back. New York will have more of the ball and will get opportunities against an Inter Miami defense that hasn’t kept a clean sheet in 14 straight matches against MLS sides. The Red Bulls will be good for a few goals here, and Forsberg will be involved in at least one of them.
