Senators vs Canadiens Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Injuries have taken a hit to key players on the Ottawa Senators, while the Montreal Canadiens have cooled down significantly from a red-hot streak and due to that, solid offense has been quite a struggle for both teams to come by which will have an impact in tonight's matchup.

The Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens will look to snap three-game losing streaks when they return to action Saturday night.

My Senators vs. Canadiens predictions expect a competitive but low-scoring affair between a pair of teams struggling to put the puck in the net.

Let’s break things down further with my February 22 NHL picks.

Senators vs Canadiens prediction

My Senators pick
Under 6 (-119 at Pinnacle)

My Senators analysis
The Montreal Canadiens have come back down to earth following a month-long heater where they were almost unbeatable.

Their offense, in particular, has completely dried up. They’ve scored just 14 goals at 5v5 over their last 10 games, which is more than only two teams.

They haven’t looked any better on the power play, sitting 30th in shot generation and 31st in expected goals over the same period.

Unsurprisingly, they’ve scored three goals or fewer in nine of their past 10 games as a result.

It’ll be tough for them to ramp things up against an Ottawa Senators team that has played much better defense under head coach Travis Green. They rank 4th in expected goals and 7th in high-danger chances against at 5v5 this season.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Ottawa’s offense is in a tough spot. They have scored fewer 5v5 goals than anybody since the calendar flipped.

Generating offense has been a challenge and that’ll likely continue to be the case with so many key players sidelined.

Josh Norris and Shane Pinto, the team’s 2nd and 3rd centers who’ve combined for 30 goals this season, are out of the picture with injuries. Captain Brady Tkachuk is also banged up and will be playing at less than 100% percent.

These injuries have really thinned out Ottawa’s lineup and made grinding things out in low-scoring games a necessity in order to find success.

With both teams struggling to find the back of the net, and perhaps a little rust stemming from most players returning from vacations, there shouldn’t be fireworks in this one.

Senators vs Canadiens odds analysis

There’s been a big market correction on the moneyline odds. Montreal opened as +154 underdogs but, with Ottawa missing several key pieces, that line was bet down to a +140 price point. The Canadiens closed as +138 dogs in the only meeting between the two sides this season – a game in which they won.

The total has seen next to no movement. The Under of 6.0 was priced at -119 minutes after opening and is still trading at that exact price.

I’m a little surprised the line hasn’t shifted further towards the Under. Montreal has played to the Under in six of their past 10 games while the Senators have cashed only 20 Overs through 56 games this season.
