Redblacks vs Elks Prediction, Picks & Odds for CFL Week 5

Ponnaiya Prediction: The Elks are coming off nine days of rest, and that should help QB Tre Ford and Edmonton to cover the spread against the Redblacks.

Week 5 in the CFL wraps up on Sunday with a clash between the Ottawa Redblacks and Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium.

Edmonton has yet to win a game this year, but my Redblacks vs. Elks predictions are backing the home side on a close spread.

Here are my best free CFL picks and predictions for this showdown on July 6.

Redblacks vs Elks prediction

My Redblacks vs Elks pick: Elks +1.5 (-110 at BET99)

The Edmonton Elks came into this season with high expectations after finishing last year on a 7-4 run. They got a new head coach, gave the keys of their offense to young QB Tre Ford, and overhauled their defense with seven new starters.

However, all of those changes haven't paid off so far with Edmonton going 0-3 straight up and against the spread. That said, they are coming off nine days of rest, and with a long week to prepare for this matchup, I expect a better performance from them at home.

Keep in mind that the Elks' new-look offense finally clicked in the second half against Montreal in Week 3, and they played tough against Winnipeg in Week 4 before the Bombers separated in the fourth quarter.

The Ottawa Redblacks are 1-3 SU and ATS, and they aren't anywhere near as good as the Als or Bombers. The Redblacks get back QB Dru Brown after a three-game absence. However, their banged-up offensive line is the lowest-graded unit in the league per PFF so this might be the game where the Elks' revamped D-line breaks out.

On the other side of the ball, Ottawa has looked vulnerable in the second level and could struggle to contain Edmonton's explosive ground game.

Redblacks vs Elks same-game parlay (SGP)

Elks +1.5

Over 52.5

It will be important to monitor the weather for this game, as there may be wet conditions. As of Saturday afternoon, the rain is expected to be relatively light and with moderate winds in effect, I don't expect it to impact scoring.

That being the case, I like the Over 52.5 in this SGP. The Elks are last in the CFL in yards allowed per play (7.94) while the Redblacks are second-last (7.30) despite benefitting from a Week 3 clash when terrible weather curbed Calgary's offense.

Ottawa's offense will get a boost from the return of Brown, who threw for 413 yards in Week 1 before missing the last three weeks with a hip injury. Meanwhile, the Redblacks could have a tough time game-planning against Ford, who is highly dangerous with his arm and feet.
