A mysterious phone call minutes before Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez’s title fight saw Adin Ross switch his million-dollar wager from the loser to the winner.

While live-streaming on Kick on Saturday evening, Ross received a phone call that led to him demanding his bet be changed from Alvarez to Crawford.

Key Takeaways

  • Ross had bet on Alvarez, but he switched it to Crawford after the call

  • Crawford won via unanimous decision in his first fight at 168 pounds

  • A preeminent promoter wants Crawford to fight David Benavidez

Ross, who has 1.8 million followers on Kick, was live during the build-up to Saturday’s fight between the undefeated Crawford and the legendary Alvarez in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 24-year-old had filled up parts of the stream by talking up Alvarez, who was around a -160 favorite at major sportsbooks the day of the championship bout.

However, Ross received a phone call from an unknown individual during the co-main event, or the final contest before Crawford and Alvarez stepped into the ring. With a shocked look on his face, he informed his stream that it was a “very important call.”

Upon returning to his desk following the conversation, he said that he was switching his bet from Alvarez to Crawford to win.

“We’re definitely switching our bet,” Ross said with several of his friends in the room. “We’re going Crawford… I’ll tell you guys off-stream, we’re good, just go Crawford.”

“All I’m gonna say, chat, I just [had] one of those calls, and they were like ‘Listen, we think that if you were to do this, it’s gonna get bad, if you do this, it’s gonna get bad, it’s not rigged.’”

The underdog pays big

Ross never clarified who or was on the other end or what was said during the fortuitous phone call that helped him net more than $1 million in winnings following Crawford’s victory.

Crawford had only fought at 154 pounds once and had never competed in the 168-pound division, in which Alvarez was the undisputed world champion.

Scoring a unanimous decision on the judges’ scorecards, Crawford became the first-ever undisputed three-division world champion in the four-belt era.

The final result came as a surprise to many - but not to all.

BetMGM reported one day before the fight that it had accepted a $2 million wager on the American to defeat his Mexican counterpart. The result landed the bettor a smooth $4.8 million payout.

Caesars also shared on Friday that it had taken a $715,000 wager on Crawford to win the fight, causing his odds at Caesars to shift from +140 to +125. The bettor walked away with just over $1 million after all three judges scored the fight in his favor.

Crawford’s next big fight?

BetMGM said leading up to the fight that it expected the bout to draw more interest than any other boxing event this year.

Saudi Arabian sports promoter Turki Al-Sheikh, who helped put together the Alvarez-Crawford fight, has already set his sights on building the next superfight for the new super middleweight champion of the world.

He wants to see Crawford fight David Benavidez (30-0-0, 24 KOs), who holds the World Boxing Association light heavyweight and World Boxing Council light heavyweight titles. The fight would supposedly take place in the 168-pound division.
