The New York Mets will look to clinch a series win against the Arizona Diamondbacks when the two teams clash again at Chase Field on Tuesday night.

David Peterson has been great this season, and I’m predicting he'll lead New York to another win in my Mets vs. Diamondbacks predictions for tonight.

Read on to see a complete breakdown of why I like that bet and my other thoughts on tonight’s game in my MLB picks for Tuesday, May 6.

Mets vs Diamondbacks prediction

My Mets vs Diamondbacks best bet: Mets moneyline (-105 at BetMGM)

The New York Mets have slowed down after a torrid start, losing four of their last six games overall. Still, it’s hardly time to panic in Queens, as this team continues to combine a deep, powerful lineup with starting pitching that has been even better than the high expectations set on it heading into the season.

David Peterson was one of the question marks in that rotation heading into 2025. The 29-year-old lefty spent the first four years of his career bouncing between the minors and majors, showing promise but ultimately looking inconsistent each season. That all changed in 2024, when Peterson went 10-3 with a 2.90 ERA and a solid 1.289 WHIP, easily the best numbers of his career.

That left Mets fans wondering whether Peterson would continue to improve in 2025, and so far, the returns have been excellent. Peterson has a 3.06 ERA and an outstanding 2.94 FIP in his first six starts. He's walking the fewest batters of his career and has seen his strikeout rate tick up again after dropping last season, giving him a career-best 3.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio. One of the most important things we’ve seen out of Peterson is consistency: he hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of his starts this year.

That includes a solid start against the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 29. In that game, Peterson allowed just one run on five hits over five innings of work. Everything we know about Arizona’s offense suggests he can repeat that performance tonight. The Diamondbacks have put up a .667 OPS against left-handed pitching, a massive 128 points lower than the .795 mark they post against righties. This lineup lacks power against southpaws, making it hard to score runs in bunches against Peterson.

Zac Gallen gets the start for Arizona, and he also looked good against the Mets on May 1, allowing just one run in six innings, but Gallen hasn’t been great overall this year, allowing six homers in his first 38 1/3 innings of work on his way to a 4.93 ERA and 4.34 FIP. This is not the same Gallen who dominated NL offenses in 2022 and 2023, as his WHIP (1.304) has now increased three seasons in a row, while his walk rate has gone above four per nine innings.

That’s a questionable formula against a Mets lineup with power and patience, ranking 11th in the majors in homers and fifth in walks. And while Arizona can normally slug with New York, Peterson represents an awful matchup for this Diamondbacks lineup.

Mets vs Diamondbacks same-game parlay (SGP)

Mets moneyline

Under 9.5

Pete Alonso Over 0.5 RBI

Along with taking the Mets tonight, I’ll also place a bet on the Under. Peterson hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any start yet this year, and his starts have resulted in nine total runs or less in four of his last five starts.

And while I’m not big on Gallen tonight, he did have a good start against the Mets just five days ago, suggesting me might keep this lineup in check to some extent. I’m buying the total up to 9.5 to ensure we get a win on the very common total of nine runs.

To round out my SGP, I’ll take Pete Alonso to pick up at least one RBI tonight. There are no signs of Alonso slowing down from his fast start in April, as he's homered in two of his last four games and has knocked in a run in three of those contests.

Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
