2025 Rookie of the Year Odds: Sensational Sasaki

Roki Sasaki enters training camp as the presumptive favorite to win NL Rookie of the Year. Part of that is he's been pitching professionally for years by this point. But that doesn't mean he's a shoo-in.

Spring training is about to ramp up, meaning we'll get a better idea of roster competitions as we get closer to March and Opening Day.

For now, trying to pick a Rookie of the Year in either the American League or National League is a near-impossible endeavor.

Here's a look at the MLB odds and who are considered the best options to win their respective ROY awards.

AL Rookie of the Year odds analysis

2/17/2025: Jasson Dominguez has been a top prospect for so long, it's wild that he's still a rookie and only 22. And he may have an inside track at the AL ROY, as the odds suggest, but I'd be looking elsewhere right now, at least for a speculative wager.

I'm also not keying in on Boston Red Sox prospects Roman Anthony or Kristian Campbell because their roles are at least a little muddy. The Alex Bregman signing puts Campbell's immediate future in question while Boston may elect to season Anthony a bit longer at Triple-A with Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela, Jarren Duran, and Masatake Yoshida occupying the outfield rotation.

Instead, I'm eyeing three others. First, Detroit Tigers right-hander Jackson Jobe should have a spot in the rotation locked up even with Jack Flaherty returning. He had a 2.36 ERA in 91 2/3 minor-league innings in 2024 and has attained top pitching prospect in baseball status. He had a cup of coffee with the parent club, pitching in relief, but should be geared up for a significant role in 2025.

Next, +1300 for Baltimore Orioles slugger Coby Mayo is too much of an overcorrection after a disappointing debut. But all he's done in the minors is hit and hit for power. He slugged 25 homers in 93 games just last season. The bump in odds may be due to a non-guaranteed role to start, but expect him to break camp with the big-league club if he can string together some good performances in spring.

Finally, my favorite pick here — though not without risk — is Texas Rangers right-hander Kumar Rocker. Now, the rub is that he is apparently not guaranteed a rotation spot with Texas likely electing to roll out Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, Cody Bradford, and Tyler Mahle if they're all healthy. That's a big if.  The +2000 on Rocker today is already appealing, but he might be worth holding off until the season starts and he's in Triple-A. Those odds will get better and one of those five pitchers will either get hurt or pitch himself out of a rotation spot.

NL Rookie of the Year odds analysis

1/20/2025:  With all the fanfare unsurprisingly around Roki Sasaki, the National League is also thinner in overall Rookie of the Year options. This race will better crystallize as spring training progresses and we get a better feel for who will make Opening Day rosters. If Drake Baldwin, for example, makes the Atlanta Braves, he will jump up to the leaderboard. As it is, he is available at +5000 at bet365.

Quinn Matthews could be a viable dark horse if he lands a spot in the St. Louis Cardinals rotation. The left-hander made major strides in the system last season, posting a 2.76 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with a 35.4% strikeout rate across four minor-league levels. He got tooled up a bit in Triple-A but a spike in his walk rate may also indicate that he had trouble navigating the automated strike zone, which would not be an issue in the majors.

But the clearest path to winning the award is simply playing time. The top names on this board — Roki Sasaki, Dylan Crews, and Matt Shaw — should all be on their respective Opening Day rosters. If Bubba Chandler isn't in the Pittsburgh Pirates' rotation, he may soon be if Bailey Falter or Johan Oviedo stumble out of the gate, but the door is open for Chandler to make a big impression this spring. Still, they may go the same route that worked for Paul Skenes in 2024. However, he's not on the 40-man roster and Braxton Ashcraft is...meaning I wouldn't be shocked if he gets a crack at the big-league roster before Chandler.

Finally, Jordan Lawlar would likely be further up the board were it not for injury concerns that have kept him eligible for this list in the first place. If he is blocked by Gerardo Perdomo, it won't be for long because Lawlar's bat should make him a priority.

Past Rookie of the Year winners

Previous AL RoY winners

Although all players have an equal chance of winning the AL Rookie of the Year Award, the honor has been claimed disproportionately by outfielders since its inception in 1949. Outfielders have 24 victories compared to 17 for pitchers and 17 for shortstops. Catchers are bringing up the rear with just two ROY victories over the past 72 years.

Previous NL RoY winners

No franchise has won more Rookie of the Year awards than the Dodgers. "The Blue Crew" have claimed 18 RoY trophies dating back to the club's early days in Brooklyn.

However, unlike the AL — where the West has been the recent home of the top rookies — the NL East has housed five of the last 12 RoYs, with a mix of outfielders, infielders, starting pitchers, and even a reliever.

MLB RoY odds explained

Most sportsbooks will display odds in the American format as listed above. When Julio Rodriguez all but claimed the AL Rookie of the Year in 2022, his odds had a minus (-) sign ahead of the number down the stretch.

  • Julio Rodriguez -4,000

That means that a bettor in September had to wager $4,000 to win $100 by betting on J-Rod to win AL RoY. Before the season starts, almost every player will have a plus (+) sign ahead of their odds.

  • Corbin Carroll +380

That means a bettor would profit $380 for a $100 wager on Carroll before the season started if he's ultimately successful (which he was!).

If American odds aren't your thing, simply use a tool like our odds converter to switch the odds to decimal or fractional format. Most online sportsbooks also give you the option to change the odds format that you see.
