The Seattle Mariners’ reign of terror seems to be coming to an end following a series loss in Milwaukee, but they’ll have an opportunity to pick things right back up with a soft opponent in the Los Angeles Angels lurking this weekend.

We’ll explain in our Mariners vs. Angels predictions why the home side could actually be the more trustworthy here, leaning on an advantage in the pitching matchup.

Without further ado, let’s hand out some MLB picks for Thursday, July 24.

It should be said that I trust neither of these two pitchers. Yusei Kikuchi has put together a lifetime of bad seasons at this level, struggling to keep the ball in the park and loading up the bases with walks and attackable pitches.

Logan Evans hasn’t been around nearly as long, but already through 10 starts we’re beginning to see how limited he currently is in the big leagues.

The righty has never been much of a strikeout guy, so the natural dip in that area when graduating to the major-league level has been particularly hard on him.

The right-hander isn’t walking many batters, but it wouldn’t seem like that’s a winning strategy at the moment. His .301 Expected Batting Average and .505 Expected Slugging are wildly high figures, a result of blending high exit velocities with plenty of fly balls and line drives.

That’s going to put him under the gun here inside a rather hitter-friendly Angel Stadium. Evans’ 5.06 road ERA is already much higher than his 2.60 in Seattle – where he can use his pitcher-friendly park to rack up outs on contact.

Now he has to combat the hottest offense in baseball over the last two weeks which has put up a terrorizing .187 Isolated Power with plenty of hits and walks.

While Kikuchi has similar issues with home runs, and does pitch at a park where the ball soars, he’s actually managed to post a 1.98 ERA in 10 starts in Anaheim this season.

A lot of that is due to the fact that the Los Angeles Angels’ outfield defense has been good, and the dimensions of the park have actually limited doubles and triples quite a bit in the last three years.

With only the home run to fear here, and the Seattle Mariners striking out a ton in the last two weeks to just a .257 average, the veteran has to be your man in this one.

He owns a .199 career xBA against this current M's roster, and while he’s been untrustworthy this season we do know he is capable of hunting down strikeouts.

Seattle’s starved for contact right now, and has rated worse versus lefties with a near-two point spike in strikeout rate, meaning Kikuchi should be set up to win this one for his side.

Mariners vs Angels same-game parlay (SGP)

Angels moneyline

Zach Neto 2+ total bases

J.P. Crawford 1+ walks

This parlay’s a little funky, but I do like picking out some batters from each side with neither man really set up to dominate here.

Zach Neto is a good call against Evans, given his preference to hit against fly-ball pitchers. While his average has been roughly the same in either side of the split, he’s slugging .558 versus fly-ballers to represent a jump of 146 points over his numbers against ground-ballers.

That will help us out with total bases in the event he’s to record just one hit here, and making matters sweeter is that he owns a .324 xBA against sinkers from righties – a pitch he’ll see plenty of from Evans.

Then, I think we pick on Kikuchi’s persistent walk issues with J.P. Crawford. He’s been a walk machine against left-handers with a team-leading 16.1% free pass rate, and even though he’s grown a bit impatient of late he’s still waking in 8.7% of plate appearances in the last two weeks.

Kikuchi is wearing a bad 10.3% walk rate this year with eight walks in his last four starts, putting the leadoff man in an advantageous spot.
