John Mateer is increasingly a trendy Heisman contender, currently listed at +800 at FanDuel, tied for the best odds on the board.

A year ago, some of that same thought applied to Jackson Arnold, then the quarterback of the Oklahoma Sooners but now the quarterback of the Auburn Tigers.

My Auburn vs. Oklahoma predictions and college football picks trust those two quarterbacks and their respective offensive lines. Kickoff comes at 3:30 ET on Saturday, September 30.

Our best Auburn vs Oklahoma SGP for Week 4

This total fell too far. One might argue it never should have fallen at all. Advanced metrics are split, but they are heavily weighting how both these defenses did against vastly inferior opponents, quite possibly underappreciating what their offenses did.

Both Auburn and Oklahoma have quality offensive lines creating running lanes for their quarterbacks, and the dual-threat abilities of both John Mateer and Jackson Arnold have defenses on their heels.

Brent Venables may be one of the best defensive minds of the 21st century, but Hugh Freeze is one of the best offensive minds. Venables’s familiarity with Arnold will not outright stop him.

Frankly, Freeze may find a way to use that against Oklahoma, springing Arnold loose for a long gain that could quite possibly reach the end zone.

On the other side of the ball, Auburn has done well defending the rush this season, so look for Mateer to add to his Heisman campaign more through the air than the ground, especially where it matters most.

Note if there is an applicable parlay boost available.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
