It’s an out of conference foray for the Mississippi Rebels as they’ll welcome a dangerous Tulane team to town.

Both teams arrive undefeated which adds to the intrigue. Tulane got a tight win over South Alabama last week and the Rebels got a victory over conference foe Arkansas.

My Tulane vs. Mississippi predictions break it all down as I bring you my college football picks for Saturday, September 20.

Tulane vs Mississippi prediction

Tulane vs Mississippi best bet: Jake Retzlaff anytime touchdown (-120)

After Mississippi head coach Lane Kiffin claimed that Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall would be coaching in the SEC next season, this game got a little more attention.

And for good reason — it’s an interesting matchup with the potential to be highly entertaining.

That Kiffin claim wasn’t born out of thin air either; Sumrall has built the Wave into a very formidable Group of Five team by consistently having them well-scouted and ready to go.

And that directly correlates to my best bet: Jake Retzlaff to find paydirt.

Just as we noted in our lead-up to Arkansas vs. Ole Miss last week, it appears this Rebels rushing defense will be the team’s weakness.

Through three games this season, it ranks 134th nationally in EPA per rush. One of these came against a dynamic Arkansas offense, so there’s no shame in that, but another came against a very one-dimensional Kentucky team that ran with ease.

Not only has Jake Retzlaff been the most efficient runner for the Wave this season, he’s also been the most explosive, averaging double-digit yards per carry.

That’s no small feat, and I expect him to be the go-to option on the ground for Tulane in this matchup, exploiting a very leaky Mississippi rush defense.

Tulane vs Mississippi same-game parlay

I’ll back Tulane to stay close here because I see them having a massive advantage on the ground.

I also view this as highly correlated with the Over, as all but one game in the Sumrall era featuring him as a double-digit underdog have gone Over the total.

Tulane vs Mississippi SGP

  • Jake Retzlaff anytime touchdown
  • Tulane +11.5
  • Over 61.5

Our deep-ball SGP: Ole Miss Bringing the Spark

Deuce Alexander’s explosiveness and speed stand out as nice value to score against a defense that struggles with that very thing.

Likewise, I projected the Kewan Lacy rushing total about five yards higher against a porous rushing defense.

Tulane vs Mississippi SGP

  • Jake Retzlaff anytime touchdown
  • Tulane +11.5
  • Over 61.5
  • Kewan Lacy Over 90.5 rushing yards
  • Deuce Alexander anytime touchdown

Tulane vs Mississippi odds

  • Spread: Tulane +12.5 (-110) | Mississippi -12.5 (-110)
  • Moneyline: Tulane +350 | Mississippi -465
  • Over/Under: Over 61.5 (-110) | Under 61.5 (-110)
