The Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks wrap up their regular seasons at the SAP Center on Wednesday, April 16, and there’s nothing up for grabs with Edmonton settled into third place in the Pacific Division and San Jose sitting in the NHL basement.
My top Oilers vs. Sharks predictions and NHL picks are calling for a low-scoring result tonight.
Oilers vs Sharks prediction
My Oilers pick: Under 6.5 (-110 at BET99)
My Oilers analysis
There’s nothing on the line at the SAP Center tonight, and I’m expecting the Edmonton Oilers to rest several key players ahead of the postseason. In addition to impact scorers sitting out, Edmonton head coach Kris Knoblauch will also be calling for a north-south style with an emphasis on playing a low-event game.
Keeping it simple and battening down the defensive hatches will be the game plan for the Oil.
On the other bench, the San Jose Sharks have mailed it in with 10 consecutive losses, including losing 3-2 and 4-2 to Edmonton.
San Jose has also been held to two goals or fewer in eight of the last 10, dropping to a 31st-ranked 2.57 goals per game.
Additionally, Edmonton has largely finished the season strong despite all the injuries and frequently playing without top players. The Oilers head into Game 82 with an active 6-3 record while allowing just 2.56 goals per game and playing to the Under in eight of those nine contests.
I’m expecting more of the same tonight in San Jose.
Oilers vs Sharks same-game parlay (SGP)
Pairing the Under 6.5 with two Overs is a nice multiplier for this same-game parlay, and both Oilers winger Viktor Arvidsson and Sharks star Macklin Celebrini are high-volume shooters finishing the season strong.
Arvidsson has a team-high 32 shots across his past nine contests and has recorded three or more in six of those contests. This is also a soft matchup with San Jose allowing the second-most shots per game (31.8) and sporting a 31st-ranked 45.4 Corsi For percentage for the campaign.
Switching to Celebrini, he’s matchup proof and has hit another level since the 4 Nations Face-Off with 23 points across 24 games with an impressive 10.47 shots and 19.69 attempts per 60 minutes during the stretch. He’s recorded three or more shots in 17 of those 24 games, too.
