Shohei Ohtani and the high-powered Los Angeles Dodgers have been quiet through the first two games of this series, losing a pair of very low-scoring games.
My Dodgers vs. Cardinals predictions expect Ohtani & Co. to come to life in the series finale.
Let’s break down why in my MLB picks for June 8.
Dodgers vs Cardinals prediction
My Dodgers vs Cardinals best bet: Shohei Ohtani Over 1.5 total bases (-137 at Caesars)
Shohei Ohtani is the king of bases. He's cleared this line at a healthy 54% clip while averaging a whopping 2.5 bases per game.
He's been equally as good when playing away from the hot, power-friendly (for left-handed bats, at least) environment that is Dodger Stadium, averaging 2.5 bags on the road.
Ohtani has just a pair of singles in this series against the St. Louis Cardinals, but there’s reason to believe he’ll go out with a bang.
For one, he’s as consistent as they come and almost impossible to slow down for an entire series. Only once over the last six weeks has he gone more than two games in a row without recording two or more bases.
More importantly, he profiles extremely well against what Cardinals' starter Michael McGreevy possesses in his pitching arsenal.
McGreevy will attack Ohtani with the fastball, cutter, and sweeper. Isolating those three pitches thrown by right-handed arms, Ohtani is hitting .329 with a .397 ISO and 73% hard hit rate on the season. Oh, and his average exit velocity (99.5) is approaching 100. Out of this world numbers.
As a cherry on top, it’s supposed to be a hot, humid afternoon in St. Louis. Temperatures will approach 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and the wind is blowing out, giving Ohtani ideal hitting conditions.
Caesars QuickPick: Our Dodgers vs Cardinals same-game parlay (SGP)
Freddie Freeman is one of the most consistent hitters in baseball and has recorded at least one hit in 72% of his games this season — including a ridiculous 80% success rate when facing a right-handed starter.
Freeman has only hit safely in one of the past four games, which is very abnormal for him. The good news is he has a nice matchup against an inexperienced starter, which can help him get back on track.
Not to mention, the splits are working in his favor. He’s hitting nearly .400 against RHPs this season, while McGreevy — albeit over a small sample — has looked more susceptible to allowing damage against left-handed bats.
The Los Angeles Dodgers rank second in runs per game (5.5) yet have scored just three times over the first two games of this series.
The offense is due to break out, and facing a young arm could help them do just that. They’ve also won by multiple runs in eight of their last nine road wins, a trend I expect to continue on Sunday.
