The Los Angeles Dodgers (15-6) look for a fifth consecutive victory as they face the Texas Rangers (12-8) in Arlington on Saturday afternoon.
Prized offseason signee Roki Sasaki takes the mound for L.A. He’s been off to a rocky start, so I’m targeting an opposing player prop with my Dodgers vs. Rangers predictions and MLB picks for Saturday, April 19.
Dodgers vs Rangers prediction
My Dodgers vs Rangers best bet: Corey Seager Over 1.5 hits, runs, RBI (-115 at bet365)
One of the top offseason storylines in the MLB was where Japanese wunderkind Roki Sasaki would sign. In what ended up seeming like a foregone conclusion, he chose the Los Angeles Dodgers.
However, the golden-armed youth hasn’t found life in the states all sunshine and rainbows. He’s walking 8.6 batters per nine innings en route to an unseemly 5.08 FIP.
Life will remain difficult for the 23-year-old as a two-pitch hurler if he can’t effectively control either offering. He’s mixed in his tertiary slider more frequently in recent starts, but not much against left-handed bats.
He’s struggled against lefties in general (5.89 FIP and 1.86 WHIP), which is music to the ears of former Dodger and current Texas Rangers star Corey Seager.
Seager put up absurd numbers (161 wRC+ and .394 wOBA) against right-handed pitchers a year ago. He’s picked up right where he left off (182 wRC+ and .422 wOBA) and will look to capitalize against a starting pitcher who has yet to make it out of the fifth inning in any of his four starts.
One of the greatest parts about Seager’s game is that he doesn’t have a particular vulnerability according to his pitch type splits.
The 30-year-old positively crushes four-seamers (172 wRC+) and is slightly above water against splitters (107 wRC+), so Sasaki is in danger anytime he finds the strike zone. If Sasaki reverts to walking far too many batters, Seager can hit the Over in his H+R+RBI prop in a multitude of ways.
Seager is 9-for-14 in his last four games, so here’s betting on him staying hot.
Dodgers vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)
Teoscar Hernandez Over 1.5 hits, runs, RBI
Joc Pederson Over 1.5 hits, runs, RBI
Corey Seager Over 1.5 hits, runs, RBI
Nathan Eovaldi takes the mound for Texas. He ranks in the 38th percentile in xERA and the 24th percentile in xBA, and his average fastball velocity is down 1.5 mph from last year.
Teoscar Hernandez has given him trouble in the past, batting 6-for-16 with a 1.286 OPS. The outfielder is swinging a hot stick and ranks in the 70th percentile in both xBA and xSLG, so I’ll bet on him staying hot.
It may seem absurd to bet an Over on the slumping Joc Pederson … but the right-handed pitching masher has favorable platoon and pitchy type splits in this matchup.
Joc crushes righties (career 126 wRC+) and four-seamers (144 wRC+), and is above water against splitters (102 wRC+). That’s a perfect recipe for beating Sasaki and breaking out of the slump, especially for the handsome plus money offered on his Overs by the books.
