The New York Yankees are back on a roll with three wins in a row, and over that span, they’ve scored 26 runs to instill fear in opposing pitchers after a brief slump to begin the month.
Now, they’ll face a friendly fly-ball arm in one of their former farmhands, and my Yankees vs Athletics predictions will go over why they should have the upper hand in the pitching matchup.

My Yankees vs Athletics best bet: Yankees F5 moneyline (-148 at FanDuel)
After a couple of tumultuous seasons with the New York Yankees, Carlos Rodon is finally pitching like Carlos Rodon again.
This man was one of the National League’s Top 5 arms as recently as two years ago, blending solid strikeout numbers with friendly numbers on contact, and in 2025, he will be taking yet another step forward.
Rodon has decided to mix in a sinker this season and throw the changeup more frequently, leading to a huge jump in ground ball rate. That’s not always the best strategy, but for a guy who struggled to a barrel rate over 11% the past two seasons, it’s refreshing to see.
The lefty’s heavy fly-ball approach led to plenty of home runs inside his hitter-friendly park, but now he can allow his dominant 30.3% strikeout rate to go to work even more for him. Pitching in Sacramento, Rodon will rest on his new profile to make it through.
JP Sears hasn’t learned quite the same lesson, though he’s pitched well enough to a 3.23 xERA thanks to very few walks and a fair bit of ground balls.
He’s brought his rate of contact on the ground up two points, though it hasn’t come up quite high enough, and that’s led to a 5.00 ERA in nine innings at home with two home runs.
The Athletics rank sixth in OPS against ground ball pitchers this season compared to 17th in the reverse split, but I have some doubts against Rodon, given they’re sporting just a .125 Isolated Power in the last two weeks.
The Yankees, meanwhile, are the fourth-best offense in those 14 days with an insane .246 ISO and low strikeout rate — and Sears may not stand a chance.
There’s little value to be found in the total here, so I think you want to take the better of the two starting pitchers for this kind of environment and bank on the Athletics’ lack of power.

Rodon struck out just five San Diego Padres in his most recent start, but that’s a pretty impressive number given they’re one of the stingiest teams when it comes to striking out.
Prior to that, he’d gone for seven or more in all but one of his seven outings, and against an Athletics team which has stuck out in 22.5% of plate appearances vs. lefties, I think there’s a great chance he can do it again.
I also love Paul Goldschmidt here. Not only is he hitting over .300 against fly-ball arms this season, but he’s hitting .581 against southpaws in 37 plate appearances with a .450 ISO, with two multi-hit games in his last four.
