Two NL West contenders square off again tonight at Chase Field as the Los Angeles Dodgers face the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Roki Sasaki takes the mound for L.A., and given his recent struggles, my Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks predictions and MLB picks for Friday, May 9, are eyeing Arizona’s team total.
Dodgers vs Diamondbacks prediction
My Dodgers vs Diamondbacks best bet: Diamondbacks team total Over 4.5 (-115 at bet365)
The Los Angeles Dodgers made a splash by signing 23-year-old Roki Sasaki from Japan to help with their uncanny starting pitching depth. But it’s been a struggle for the youngster thus far, putting a damper on his prospects.
Although his 3.86 ERA isn’t much of an eyesore, the underlying numbers (5.52 xERA and 5.41 FIP) are. The flamethrower has been unable to garner many strikeouts (17.9% K rate) and is walking far too many batters (14.9% BB rate). He’s walked multiple batters in every start, and it has caught up to him recently (six earned runs across his last two starts).
Opposing hitters aren’t fooled by his stuff (third percentile chase rate) and are making quality contact (29th percentile hard-hit rate). It doesn’t help that he’s a fly ball pitcher, ranking in the 29th percentile in groundball rate.
The pitch models aren’t a fan of his offerings, either, as his 90 Stuff+ ranks 133rd out of 146 starting pitchers who have thrown at least 20 innings.
I’ve been a vocal critic of his repertoire since we first got a glimpse of him in the majors. He throws hard, but not as hard as scouts thought he would, and batters have crushed his fastball (.299 xBA and .596 xSLG).
That means that his splitter is his only "plus" offering. He’s tried to mix in his slider more in recent starts, but batters are catching on and have posted a .273 AVG and .455 SLG against it.
This will be his first time pitching on five days' rest after receiving at least six days of rest before each one of his other starts.
The Arizona Diamondbacks team total is set at 4.5. The D-backs have scored 5+ runs in four of their last six home games, and I’m betting on them doing so again in a favorable matchup.
Dodgers vs Diamondbacks same-game parlay (SGP)
Diamondbacks team total Over 4.5
Eduardo Rodriguez Over 4.5 strikeouts
Corbin Carroll Over 1.5 total bases
Veteran Eduardo Rodriguez gets the call for Arizona and while his 5.92 ERA isn’t pretty, the underlying numbers (3.43 xERA and 4.08 FIP) are much more palatable.
The left-hander recorded 10 strikeouts in his last start and has notched 5+ punchouts in three of his last four outings.
Corbin Carroll has been on a tear with a 161 wRC+ to start the year. He’s recorded 2+ total bases in three of his last four games and is likely to do so again if Arizona exceeds its team total, making for a correlated play.
